so much wasted creativity!

every year i see brillient creative people focusing creative energy and time that could go to making their homes and community better into a glorified party. Okay, you went into the desert, took acid, saw a reenactment of the annual destruction of the wheat-god, saw people acting "differenent" and now you are bleeding time, money, resources, energy out of the local community.

many of my burner friends say "oh but we come back and see each other and know we were at the burn and we work on local events like Soak" okay so what you take back is that you spend your remaining free time organizing more parties? who's getting fed? what's getting built? are we ANY closer to thriving with each other? to making it through WWIII and the collapse of the dollar?

this subject has come up a lot lately. i can't see dontating to someone's burningman camp as a contribution to the community. but that said, if all of the parties involved believe in this, then why stop them. i live in my creative world all of the time. it isn't much of a choice for me (the alternatives don't look good to me). my life as an artist isn't very romantic. it is my choice. i can understand the mania of having to create, it tends to motivate a goodly ammount of my personal choices, but a giant party in the dessert once a year just doesn't appeal. i can make the same correllation in why i hate valentine's day: why have only one day a year to express love for someone. if you truely love someone that should be expressed in some form every day. yes, it is mundane, but so is my life as an artist; i do it every day, not just leading up to some blow out in the desert.

I think that was what I didn't understand about Burning Man: how the entire year can revolve around one week, how much time and energy and money and creativity can be focused on just one event per year. And if you have a job, and get only two weeks of vacation per year, why would you want to spend them doing the same thing, with the same people, in the same place, year after year after year?

I don't want to stop them. It's obviously something that 30,000-plus people feel very passionately about. More power to them. Just don't give me the impression that you think something is wrong with me, or that I'm just not cool enough/good enough because I don't wish to be one of that 30,000.

i love this tribe. love it.
sometimes i feel so crazy because just about everyone i know is so into "the burn".
i just don't feel it. but i am grateful that no one from my community has ever made me feel "less" for not having interest. But i do have interest in them and how it moves them through difficult times. Country fair does that form me, but i don't have to spend more than a couple hundred -- and i personally don't have to throw a fundraiser -- although maybe i should? huh?

so, are we gonna have the "i'm not going so there!" pub crawl? i'm sooo in for it! if we send out a press release we could probably make it into the mercury! HA!!
